Does making wedding favors, as part of a business, require a food handlers permit?

03 Sep

I’m thinking of starting an at home business and would really like to include making wedding favors and other party favors as part of the business. Most favors though, especially for weddings use some type of food, such as jordan almonds, rice, heart candy, jelly beans, etc

I’m just wondering if something like that would need a food handlers permit and other similar permits since technically it would be food handling. I would love to be able to seel hand made items, but if I remember right thats considered producing and doesnt fall under a home business license.

Wedding reception ideas: food, gifts, etc. Help!!! (LONG question)?

30 May

Im getting married in August. The budget is low, think really low ($2500 or so for the entire wedding, i already have my dress). The colors are black and champage.

What are some things i could serve at my reception, the wedding is at 2pm so i won’t need to do a whole meal. I’ll probably have anywhere from 75-125 guests.

I was thinking: ham biscuits, sausage balls, cheese ball/spread with crackers, little smokies, a veggie tray, what else are some good ideas for me to choose from? What types of light food do you like to eat when at a wedding?

Favors/Gifts: My plan is to give out flower seeds for planting. Each person will get a card that open at the top (made of cardstock) and a little clear jewelry-size bag will be stapled inside and have seeds in it. On the cover of the card it will have our names and wedding dates and maybe a little poem/saying about planting the seeds and watching them grow like our love will grow (of course i’ll look up something so that it sounds right). Then under the seed bag i was going to stick a little clear label that had the name of the seeds and where to plant (ex:full sun), so when they remove the seeds they know what it is they are planting and how to plant them.

Another idea i had was i could buy a large lot of fortune cookies and have labels made with our date and name on it to put on the fortune cookie wrapping. I don’t know if this will work because it kind of doesnt go with anything else ive planned, but we love the funny sayings in fortune cookies. Should i skip this and go with the seed idea? Any other affordable suggestions are greatly appreciated!

As far as when the groom and i leave, a lot of people do bird seed or bubbles. I was really wanting to do helium balloons. I planned on having about 60 of champagne and 60 of black. At the reception they will tied for decoration and then right before we leave everyone can get a balloon or two and release them (i’ll have two people assigned to give out the balloons). I thought this would be great for photos as well. How much do you think this would cost, mainly for the helium, i can estimate the balloons but not sure yet about the helium. My mother will be calling on Monday to check on it but I thought i could get an idea from yahoo if any other people out there have rented the large tanks.

ANY OTHER IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS OR TIPS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! I’m in college and super stressed. My photographer wont respond to me with my package ideas to choose from so that means i have to search for a new one and the pastry chef/cake decorator doesnt live here anymore so now i have to find a new one of those too. As you can see, im young and clueless and need help! I feel like it’s all falling apart. Thanks so much for reading all this, if you made it this far.
No way would i make my own cake. I’m cheap, but not trashy.

Wedding Reception Food and Drinks?

18 Mar

My fiancé and I are currently planning a winter wonderland wedding on December 18, 2010. Our wedding will be exactly one week from Christmas and we live in East Texas so it’s never extremely snowy/cold outside– sometimes, but not frequently. My question is do you think it would be a bad thing for us to serve hot chocolate, apple cider, and coffee at our reception instead of punch? We’re not having a sit down dinner… rather we plan on having a desert table with gingerbread men, white chocolate pretzels, our wedding cake, snow flake shaped cookies, and candy… a table with vegetable platters and little sandwiches, and a table with fruit platters. All the weddings I’ve ever been to have served punch, but I was thinking that hot chocolate, cider, and coffee were a good alternative with the Christmas atmosphere.

Do you think that’s a good idea?
