No I don’t think that food should match the color arrangements. Usually red velvet cake has a white frosting. If you are using white, then it should match.
P.S. good cake choice and Congrats!

It doesn’t matter what the inside looks like as long as the outside goes with the theme, so I say if you want red velvet then have it, after all it’s your wedding!

Only thing that matters is the color of the icing. My colors were baby blue and navy , and white i had red velvet cake and yellow and white i had a three tier cake and had each section a diff kind.

I would doubt it, but you know red velvey cake is just chocolate cake with a lot of dye, I think it would be really cool if you died it to your color scheme, dont you? The baker can dye it any color im sure

Not necessary but a lot of people have the cake made with their theme colors. But red velvet doesn’t matter, look at all the people who have chocolate cake, I know brown or black is definitely not one of their colors lol. If you want it to match I suggest doing the red velvet cake and getting frosting that matches, you can ask for white and plum colored frosting.

Why do you want a red velvet cake exactly? Because if it is because it is red, then I would say don’t worry about matching your cake to your wedding theme, and anyone at your wedding that would call it tacky, shouldn’t be at your wedding, or you should at least not give a d*mn what they think. If you like red velvet because of the flavor, then you probably should already know that red velvet cakes are only red from food die, it is actually typically just a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. So if you just like the flavor and are he** bent on having everything match, then you can just have the food coloring be plum or something like that. But on your wedding day, you shouldn’t care what other people think. It is about making a forever bond with the person you love and letting the people you love and care about be witness to it.

I don’t think it matters. And besides the outside of the cake would still be white, so it would go & plum & red look nice together.

nope. if you want everything to match in the cake cutting pictures, have a smaller cake with a matching color on the inside that you cut, and have red velvet cake cut up and waiting in the back that waiters or whomever could give to your guests. or, if you dont want to do that, you could have a layered cake with the layer you cut with the matching color and the rest red velvet. but, dont sweat it. its more about the taste then the flavor, and if its good enough all the red in the room will be eaten up beofre you know it and you wont have ANY clashing colors

I’ve never heard of the colors having to match the food or vice verse. That’s not tacky, that’s just making things more difficult. Pick food that’s equal to the formality of your wedding. If you’re having a black tie affair, you wouldn’t serve BBQ ribs. If you’re having a backyard reception, you wouldn’t serve stuffed chicken breast on a bed of spinach with wild rice (or whatever, I couldn’t think of a good example). You can coordinate the icing on your cake to fit with your color scheme, but not the actual flavor of the cake.
Also, I’m going to suggest you don’t get red velvet cake. It’s definitely something that not everyone enjoys (I hate it). Stick with more basic favors, like vanilla or chocolate.

no, it’s not.
the outside of the cake is what matters
you could do something like this: http://www.pinkcakebox.com/images/cake746.jpg
make each of the cupcake red velvet cake, but use white cupcake cups when you (or your baker) bakes them.

“OMG did you see that cake? It was red!! It so didn’t go with her theme!! This is the worst wedding ever!”
do you really think any of your guests will be saying that at your reception? No one cares if the actual color of the cake doesn’t go with your theme. all they care about is if it tastes good. When you go for a taste test, they don’t only let you sample the cakes that go with your color scheme. You decide on what you want to have and have it!! enjoy your day!!

Not at all. Now, if you had plum, silver, and white colors and a red and black icing on the cake it might be a little weird, but you can have whatever flavor of cake you want. (I think red velvet is going to be one of my flavors, and I’m having a cinderella theme/cornflower blue wedding.)

I had the same problem! I don’t think the cake itself has to match your colors, but it is probably important if the icing/external decoration incorporates (or goes with) some aspect of your color scheme, setting, or personalities.
Here’s our experience–maybe it will help you out:
First, don’t have them dye the cake any other color without testing it first! Something happens when the chocolate mixes with the dye and it seems that red is the only color that overpowers the chocolate. We asked the baker about doing “blue velvet” (my bridesmaid dresses are cobalt blue), and she couldn’t get it to work; she tried 3 or 4 different kinds of blue dye, but they all ended up looking swampy and green! We called it “Everglade Velvet!”
Our ceremony and reception will be in a lush garden with lots of different colored flowers, so there’s a lot of color going on. We ultimately decided to go with cupcakes. We are having four different flavors: red velvet, vanilla, and cheesecake (with blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries on top), and a fudgy, chocolate ganashe.
Our baker was really sweet. She cooked a few samples of each and we put them together on a cake plate. It all looked really nice and festive; it sort of mirrors the garden atmosphere, but isn’t too matchy-matchy. Plus, everyone should find a flavor they like!

Good luck. Sounds pretty.

Dont worry about it. The red parts in the inside anyway. My wedding colors are black and white and red and our fillings are black and white cake and strawberry…. haha. We totally did not plan to coordinate, it just happened to be the 2 flavors we liked. Anyways, Im probably the only person who has ever matched their colors to the cake. No worries. Just make sure whatever decor you have ( flowers, toppers etc) fit your theme. Cream cheese frosting can be dyed white so you should be fine.
You are so lucky…my fiance HATES red velvet so that was not an option for us. Good luck!!!
